In Volume 4, she stopped changing it, letting it grow out, and that related to the growing strength of her relationship with Scott. They go to sleep and when Scott wakes up Ramona’s in the shower and Kim needs saving.Īfter Scott leaves, Ramona comes out to reveal she’s cut her hair, which throughout the books served as a symbol of the stability of her life. On the way back from a party, Kim is kidnapped by the twins and Ramona forces Scott to explain the situation with Knives, which he does less than candidly. Because she is neither the narrator nor the main character, the audience doesn’t see her internal dialogue. Ramona spends this entire book inside her own head (not literally), trying to figure out Scott and the future. But we still got exes 5 and 6 to go through! During this time, Wallace reveals the research he’s been doing on evil ex #7, Gideon Graves. She kicks Scott out for a night to get some alone time. So how do things fall apart given that Scott and Ramona are living together, both holding down jobs, happy as can be? Enter Knives Chau (17) who still has a thing for Scott and can’t help but get in a fight with Ramona before revealing that Scott two-timed them. There’s two of them this time, the twins Kyle and Ken who spend most of the book sending robots after Scott at various parties, gigs, etc. This time around the evil ex-boyfriends are in the forefront of the story. So since everything sorta came together in Volume 4, everything must fall apart in Volume 5 right? Well… yeah…
Scott and Ramona finally profess their love for each other, Lisa leaves for the USA, and the Volume ends with Scott finally learning Ramona’s age (24). Using the Power of Love, he defeats Roxie and then explains the situation to Mr. Chau comes flying out of Ramona’s head after Scott and a three-way fight ensues between Scott, Chau, and Roxie. Turns out she was spending the night at Ramona’s (double standard? Absolutely. Furious, she throws him out and they have a brief fight over him spending the night at Lisa’s. He escapes through subspace where he ends up in Ramona’s head where we see her posing as Gideon’s lapdog. Scott runs off the profess his love to Ramona only to find himself once again confronted by Knives Chau’s dad. In short, there’s a ton of romantic tension but nothing happens. She reveals she’s had a crush on him since day one, and has been acting and dressing different when hanging around him. He gets defensive, she gets agitated, Wallace needs the bed for sex that night, and Scott ends up spending the night at Lisa’s. Ramona gets them out of another brief tussle, but again the scene with the 4th evil ex doesn’t last long.īack to daily life: Ramona continues to pry Scott on what Lisa Miller was to him back in high school. The next we see of the dream girl, it’s at Scott’s job having lunch with Roxie. Their initial tussle lasts all of five pages before Scott is left alone to freak out without Ramona, who’s taking just a bit of time to herself. Have we covered it all?Įnter Roxie Richter, Ramona’s 4th evil ex-boyfriend (she’s not a boy). On top of THAT, Scott’s entered the job hunt and gets a job at a restaurant. On top of THAT, Sex Bob-omb has started recording an album alienating Young Neil and altering the character paths of Kim and Stephen Stills (yes, he’s always addressed by first and last name). On top of that, Knives (who’s still totally obsessed) Chau’s dad has taken out a personal vendetta against Scott. Scott is trying to step up his relationship with Ramona but both of them have struggled with relationships and commitment in the past.īut wait! Lisa Miller returns and immediately starts flirting with Scott who’s still as uncomfortable around her as he always was.
Wallace informs Scott that their lease is going to be up at the end of the month and heavily implies he should move in with Ramona. The evil ex featured in this book is only around for a combined 20-30 pages, but more on this later. Ten pages later, we’re launched headfirst into the primary theme of this book: figuring out life. We rejoin Scott and Ramona in the midst of summer, having fun, being young lovers, etc. But then again, we’re not done yet so I suppose I can’t be talking about retrospect yet… We’ll continue to go strong with the plot summary, save the analysis for the next two posts okay?
